The Legend of Unfinished Business

Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? No, says the older man to the younger man. He tells him that he must earn it first. If you’re still reading this after that awkward bioshock reference, then many thanks. John Legend has paid his dues, made his mark, and cemented his legacy. The youngest EGOT recipient in history, he has earned the sweat of his brow and continues to strive for more with his well-executed residency show. From a church setting to a well-detailed urban neighborhood to a dazzling Liberace-esque stage as well as some lights and a piano, John fills each setting with his well-known hits, stories of upbringing, name-dropping other famous artists whose songs he is featured on, and also some solid new songs coming from his upcoming new album. The backup singers, dancers, and diversely-talented band almost steal the show in a couple spots (particularly the guitarist who gets a solo). John Legend has defied stereotypes, racism, setbacks, heartbreak, and complacency to be a modern showman we don’t deserve. Now, a few missteps. One, when his Oscar-winning song “Glory” is performed, it feels a bit shoehorned and I’m not sure why the dancers would start stripping their church attire before that song. Second, the stage curtain is used as a backdrop for a few projected videos and I’m sorry but why would John allow his wife Chrissy Teigen’s face to appear “warped” due to the curtain? And third, he seemed to leave out the underrated “Start A Fire” from La La Land which would have worked well in the final set piece. I may be reaching but it is my review. Nevertheless, these drawbacks are minor at best and no one will feel unfilfilled from the 2+ hour performance. Keep on striving, John.
